This book is designed to help forest owners, loggers, and others better understand the Forest Practices Rules and how they protect public resources, such as water, fish, wildlife, and state and municipal capital improvements. In it, you’ll find commonly encountered rules, with photographs and illustrations that show what these operations look like. Rules that apply only to special or limited circumstances are not included. In addition to information about the rules, this book contains supplemental information to help you plan and conduct your forestry operations to be more successful.

This book answers some of the fundamental questions of forest conservation: How Much do we need to protect, where, in what way, and why? – and How To achieve this? How do we turn ecological information into a practical forest conservation plan? Nature’s forest protection needs may be modest, but virtually all European countries fall short of meeting them. This book offers a clear programme of action, representing a great opportunity to bury traditional antagonisms between the commercial forestry sector and conservation. Here is a chance to work together for the preservation of Europe’s forest biodiversity, its rich wood use traditions, and introducing new generations of Europeans to the wonders of forests.

Considering that often thinnings on low productive high forests such as those of black pine represent a cost for the manager, it is believed that interventions should be as effective as possible for the improvement of all forest functions, in the logic, therefore, to minimize the cost/benefit ratio. In this sense, beside the modality and intensity of the single treatment, the reasoning should be extended also to the thinning system within the entire life cycle of the stand. It might be appropriate, where allowed by the structural setting of the stand, to lengthen the time between thinning by carrying out single treatments more effectively; this would ensure a lower cost and a lower overall impact on the system (reduction in the number of treatments). Selective thinning proposed by the SelPiBioLife Project is consistent with this strategy. The key points of the treatment modality are:  the incisive treatment to produce effective growth increment and improvement of the candidate trees shape (productive and protective functions); the implementation of an optimal overall microclimatic environment for increasing flora and fauna biodiversity. The method we propose implies that the stand analysis will be more accurate than with customary thinning from below. The choice of candidate trees and their competitors requires then a thoughtful consideration in the marking phase, as it is a sensible responsibility for the foresters. We believe that the simple and reproducible rules for selective thinning described in this manual will support the action of forest technicians. The manual is also intended as a tool at a later stage, when the quality of the marking choices will be checked.

Οι τρέχουσες πολιτικές διατήρησης και διαχείρισης των δασών στην ΕΕ είναι ανεπαρκείς για τη διατήρηση της οικολογικής ακεραιότητας των δασών εν γένει και των δασών στο πλαίσιο του δικτύου NATURA 2000 ειδικότερα. Παρά ταύτα, το σχέδιο δράσης της ΕΕ για τα δάση δεν φέρνει φως στα κρίσιμα ζητήματα: πόσα προστατευόμενα οικοσυστήματα χρειάζονται για να αποφευχθεί η περαιτέρω απώλεια της βιοποικιλότητας των δασών; πώς μπορεί να εντοπιστούν δάση βασικής βιολογικής σημασίας και ποιοι είναι οι οικονομικά και οικολογικά δικαιολογημένοι τρόποι αντιμετώπισής τους; Το βασικό πρόβλημα που αντιμετωπίζεται σε αυτό το βιβλίο είναι ότι η έννοια της "βιώσιμης διαχείρισης των δασών" παρέμεινε μια σαφής φράση με ελάχιστο απροσδιόριστο περιεχόμενο, που συχνά δεν διακρίνεται από την κανονική εμπορική δασοκομία. Στο 1ο Μέρος αυτού του βιβλίου επαναπροσδιορίζετε η "καλή διαχείριση των δασών" προτείνοντας στόχους διατήρησης. Στο 2ο Μέρος παρουσιάζονται μελέτες περιπτώσεων δασικών πρακτικών που εφαρμόζονται σε διαφορετικά δασικά οικοσυστήματα σε ολόκληρη την ΕΕ.
